Roles are certain activities that a character is skilled at, or desires to be skilled at. On Earth, (I’m told) people’s roles change as they develop & mature. Myself, I don’t know much about maturity but it sounds like something really sweet for a fantasy game. I’m working very closely with my significant other to understand what this maturity thing is so Anachronia can have mature, sagacious wizards defend the town against blood-thirsty skull-raping hobgoblins. You’re welcome.
Roles are optional ‘flags’ for a character. They only exist to help players locate other players with compatible objectives. Roles can be changed or removed at any time. There is no numerical rating of a particular character’s efficacy in a given role, but there is a color coded meter that indicates approximately how long a character has been in the current role & how many skills he has that contribute to that role. The meter is more a measure of potential in a role, rather than experience or aptitude. There is intentionally some ambiguity in this design, as it will allow characters to acquire skills & try new roles without committing to a unrewarding role, alienating guild mates or becoming permanently broken, as is quite possible in traditional RPGs.
